A BRIEF HISTORY OF ALLENS CADGE & GILBERT SOLICITORS

The firm has a long history. Edward Cadge (1850-1927) joined James Cole Copeman (1826-1898) to form Copeman and Cadge in the late 1860’s. James had served articles with George Bohun in their home town of Beccles and married having two sons, James junior and his brother, John Cole Copeman, who also qualified as attorneys. The firm was then Copeman and Copeman later Copeman and Cadge. In 1886 Edward Cadge married Caroline Emma Bevan whose father was William Robert Bevan of Plumpton Hall near Bury St. Edmunds.

Edward Cadge’s clients included the first Lord Somerleyton, Sir Rider Haggard and William Carr both of Ditchingham, Sir Nicholas Bacon of Raveningham Hall, Sir Reginald Beauchamp of Langley Hall, as well as the Crisp family of Kirby Cane Hall and Julia D. Lofthouse formerly Haggard, of Shipdham.

As well as Loddon the firm originally had branches at Norwich, Beccles, Bungay and Acle. When James Copeman junior retired, Edward Cadge was joined by Edward Basil Graham Gilbert, known as ‘Basil’, and the firm became Cadge and Gilbert.

In January 1972, Cadge and Gilbert amalgamated with Johnson and Nicholson of Lowestoft to form Nicholson Cadge and Gilbert. Falck and Co. of Southwold joined them in 1974. Cadge and Gilbert had already amalgamated with Martin and Buckton of Bungay.

Mr. Oswald Norman Martin had come from Hay on Wye and originally joined Hazard and Pratt of Harleston. It is not clear if they were aware of the situation he had left at Hay. He was the subject of an attempted murder which left Herbert Rowse Armstrong, his rival solicitor, being hung in 1922 for the murder of his own wife, the only solicitor to have suffered this punishment.

Nicholson Cadge and Gilbert had offices in most local towns. They eventually disbanded, became Cadge and Gllbert again, and Malcolm Simpson ran both the Loddon and Bungay offices.

Meanwhile Roger Allen had begun Allens in Bungay in 1980 and then took over Hugh Martinez in Halesworth a few years later. For a short while he also had a branch in Harleston. Research has indicated that another solicitor at Halesworth and Southwold called Harry Read Allen (1849-1883), trading as Read and Allen, may interestingly have been Roger’s ancestor. Roger had the honour of being Town Reeve of Bungay in 2010. Roger and Malcolm amalgamated their firms to form Allens Cadge and Gilbert on 1st October 2012.

Malcolm retired in 2014. Several generations of Cadges and Gilberts have entered the firm and, similarly, Victoria Allen joined her father in 2010. The current offices are at Bungay, Loddon and Halesworth where Teresa Utting is based. Teresa joined Allens in 1984 as an Office Junior and has worked her way up to becoming a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Legal Executives and a Partner of the firm, alongside Roger and Victoria.

Due to the loyal support of its staff, the firm goes from strength to strength and is able to play its part in the life of the local community.
